Early Life and Career
Lucas McFadden, better known as Cut Chemist, was born on October 4, 1972, in New York City, U.S. His musical journey began with the Los Angeles-based rap group Unity Committee, where he first gained recognition with his contribution to the group's 1993 single "Lesson 4: The Radio" featured on the B-side of their "Unified Rebelution" vinyl.
Jurassic 5 and Solo Success
Unity Committee eventually evolved into Jurassic 5, joining forces with Rebels of Rhythm. Cut Chemist's "Lesson 6: The Lecture" appeared on Jurassic 5's self-titled debut EP, solidifying his position as one of the group's key members. He also served as a producer for the entire release. From 1996 to 1997, Cut Chemist worked on his solo debut album, "Live at Future Primitive Sound Session," collaborating with Shortkut from the hip-hop DJ collective Invisibl Skratch Piklz.
In 2006, Cut Chemist released his first full-length solo album, "The Audience's Listening." The album featured the Bossa Nova-inspired track "The Garden" with vocals by Brazilian artist Astrud Gilberto, incorporating the exotic instrument known as the berimbau. The album's title track was featured in an advertisement for the Apple iPod nano 2G.
Film and Acting
Beyond music, Cut Chemist has also pursued an acting career. In 1999, he appeared in the dramedy "Never Been Kissed" starring Drew Barrymore. He later landed a role as a high school chemistry teacher in the acclaimed 2007 comedy "Juno." Cut Chemist's cinematic presence continued with appearances in the drama "Up in the Air" and the horror-comedy "Jennifer's Body" in 2009.
Collaborative Projects
In addition to his solo work, Cut Chemist has collaborated with renowned artists such as DJ Shadow. In 2008, the pair released the remix album "The Hard Sell," supported by a worldwide tour featuring Canadian DJ Kid Koala, performing in cities such as Dallas, New York, and London.
"Sound of the Police" Concept
In 2010, Cut Chemist released his album "Sound of the Police," inspired by his passion for the sounds of Ethiopia, Colombia, Sudan, and Afro-Brazilian music. The album explores the roots of hip-hop culture, delving into its African origins while embracing diverse musical influences.
