Early Life and Education

Asma al-Assad was born in London, England on August 11, 1975, into a family from the Syrian city of Homs. Her father, Fawaz Akhras, worked as a cardiologist, and her mother, Sahar Otri al-Akhras, was a retired diplomat.

Asma received her education in London, attending a girls' school and earning degrees with honors from King's College London in computer science and French literature.

Career in Finance

After graduating, Asma al-Assad worked in finance. She joined Deutsche Bank in the hedge fund department, where she dealt with clients from Europe and the Far East. She later moved to J.P. Morgan in 1998, where she specialized in mergers and acquisitions for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. During her time in New York, she closed four major mergers for European and American clients.

Marriage and Family

Asma al-Assad returned to Syria in November 2000 and married Bashar al-Assad in December. They have three children: Hafez, Zein, and Karim. Asma's parents reside in the United Kingdom.

First Lady of Syria

As the first lady of Syria, Asma al-Assad has used her platform to promote education, health, and cultural initiatives. She has also been involved in efforts to improve the lives of women and children.

Health Battle

In August 2018, it was announced that Asma al-Assad had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent surgery in January 2019 to remove the malignant tumor. In August 2019, it was declared that she had beat cancer and was on the path to recovery.

Dual Nationality and Controversy

Asma al-Assad holds both Syrian and British citizenship. This has been a subject of controversy, as some have questioned her loyalty to Syria during the ongoing conflict. However, she has stated that she is proud of her Syrian heritage and has always supported her husband's government.
